INFERTILITY AND HORMONE MANAGEMENT

Infertility

Is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months. In general 85% of couples conceive within the first 12 months of trying, however, approximately 8% of couples experience persistent infertility.

Causes

There may be many causes including endometriosis, ovulatory dysfunction, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), as well as unexplained causes. Male factor infertility is seen in 25% as well.

Diagnosis

Testing Physical examination and laboratory testing are initially performed along with additional testing which may include pelvic ultrasound as well as hysterosalpingogram, which is a test to make sure the fallopian tubes are not blocked. In some cases, surgical evaluation by a procedure called laparoscopy may be needed.
